The Great Physician

And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick."
Luke 5:31

I hate going to the doctor. Not because there are shots or they might draw blood, in fact, watching blood come from my arm--i find interesting. quirky, i know.

I hate going to the doctor because that means somethings wrong. Most likely-- it's because in my own little world-- I don't get sick, and when I am, I write it off.

The question read "why are you here today?" I just sat there staring at it (more like thinking..duh, because I'm sick)  Annoyed that I was about to have to write out all my symptoms. Annoyed that I was going to have to be completely honest and couldn't just have the attitude of "no big deal" with it because  I was at the doctor for crying out loud. Why would I go the doctor and not write out all my symptoms.. I mean, you go to get answers and help. (plus, I had already tried my own remedies)

But of course, I skipped it. I went on filled out all the paperwork and then went back to it. Still annoyed. As my pen hit the paper, He (the Great Physician) spoke, loud, clear--- "this is what it's like to take your heart to me." We have to be willing to see our sin for what it is. To be honest with ourselves. Humble ourselves before the Lord. Casting our anxieties on Him.
“As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down you cannot see something that is above you.”  C. S. Lewis

Our need to be honest with Him and honest with ourselves. As I wrote out my symptoms, they became more real. But as I discussed them with the doctor, there was a sense of hope, relief to be had. The doctor knew how to diagnose and treat. In my attempt to create my own remedies, I prolonged true relief, true answers.

Why do we (I) treat our souls any different? Why do we attempt to create our own remedies to fix our hearts? Why are we afraid to pour out our hearts before Him, to name our sins and struggles.  To be honest about our hearts. He already knows our sickness anyway!  He is the Great Physician. The one who has already ransomed you and brought you from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. He is the one who came to heal the sick because those who are well aren't in need of a physician. May we press in to know our Great Physician-- admitting our weaknesses, our failures, our sin struggles. He alone can bring complete healing. He alone is the one, the Great Physician!
